O’s Track Of The Week (Christmas & New Years Special): James Brown – Funky Drummer

I can’t stress enough how much James Brown means to me.

Every since the first time I got a hold of my Dad’s Sex Machine: The Bery Best Of James Brown, I’ve been playing his music non-stop since I was a kid. It’s only until my Dad got me this legendary box set called Star Time that I officially became a stan.

Almost five hours of that compilation and I’m cherry picking my favourite tracks, which is like 15. I wish I could do a James Brown Track Of The Week in replacement for O’s Track Of The Week, but that wouldn’t be fair would it?

Now, one of the cheery picks so happen to be arguably the most important song for hip hop music – the Funky Drummer.

With Star Time, I grew up with the 7 minute version. But now that I’ve got James Brown’s entire discography, I now have 3 versions: The 7 minute version on Star Time, the 9 minute version on In The Jungle Groove and the bonus reprise beat with the legendary drum break.

It’s a James Brown record and he produced this track. But let’s not forgot the man who blessed us with the legendary drum break, which has been the most sampled sample in hip hop history: Clyde Stubblefield.

According to WhoSampled, Funky Drummer has been sampled 946 times.

According to my last.fm account, I’ve played Funky Drummer 315 times.

When I have children, no doubt I will be giving them the best of James Brown. This man’s name should may as well be a genre for music.

OWASTHERE #75 and #76 – Action Bronson and Pete Rock

What’s good!

Just want to do some short and brief reviews on my whereabouts in the past month or so.

Action Bronson was really good. BUT. It was probably the most shortest performance I’ve been to since Yasiin Bey last year at The Forum.

One thing I could say about him is that he knows how to interact with the crowd and let everybody have a great time.

I was watching him from the balcony, rare for me because I’m usually at the front, but he was moving from area to area spitting from the crowd.

Initially I came to this DJ Set expecting all hip hop.

Nah.

This guy played Jazz, Funk & Soul for a good 2 hours. He spent 30 minutes playing James Brown records.

In short, his set had nothing pre-1996. So EVERYTHING he dropped were classics.

I really wanted to meet him after, but I had to get my last train home.

#OWASTHERE – Masta Ace Gig Was Just As Good as Last Year, 4 More Gigs Confirmed

What’s good.

Masta Ace was just incredible, just as he was last year.

But he wasn’t the only one that was DOPE. Before Ace and Strickln went on stage, Wordsworth came outta nowhere and gave us a freestyle, performed a few songs, and delivered ANOTHER awesome freestyle.

That alone is better than all the Mos Def shows that I’ve been too, and I’ve seen both Wordsworth and Mos Def twice.

Watch Mos and Words go at it on the Lyricist Lounge Show back in 2000. THIS IS THE ART OF FREE-STYLING.

Remember BabeePower from Lyricist Lounge? He was the DJ!

The show was cut show due to time constraints. But nevertheless, it was a great night.

Most of his songs were from The Show (eMC), Disposable Arts and A Long Hot Summer (Beautiful was the highlight song).

Masta Ace proves once again why he’s one of the most unappreciated  emcees in the game.

This is by far the only track that I can relate to at this time, because there’s a female friend I know right now that I would want to get to know better.

But she’s mentioned in a conversation that she doesn’t want a relationship right now.

Maybe I should tell her how I really feel?

Dwele Tonight @ Jazz Cafe, Masta Ace booked, RAW next week Monday

What’s good.

I’m gonna see Dwele tonight at world famous Jazz Cafe. I’ve had positive feedback from my friends about how great he is live. So I’m looking forward to it.

It’s also a plus that he’s heavily associated to some of my favourite artists, such as J Dilla, Slum Village, Common…

Also, after that incredible show at the Jazz Cafe last year, I’ve decided to go see Masta Ace again on the 1st of May. I hope he brings Wordsworth too because he was brilliant with his freestyles.

WWE RAW is coming to the O2 on Monday, so that should be interesting. I’ve already seen Smackdown at the O2 last year, so seeing the main superstars on RAW this time should be good. This will also be my chance to do some Fandangoing.

Nothing new added to the list. Nothing else tickled my fancy.

De La Soul, Slum Village & Action Bronson would probably be my next purchases.
